A news piece written about our memorial trees

An Irish approach to Memorial trees

"When people think of Ireland, the think of how green and beautiful, it is, the rugged scenery. However few people actually realise that Ireland is the least wooded country in Europe.Irish memorial tree planted in ireland

After the Republic Of  Ireland, achieved independence in 1921, a concerted effort was made to roll back the effects of colonial exploitation of our resources. One company in Cork, has decided to do something about it as well. Gift of Ireland, has launched an Irish Oak tree planting project in Co. Cork, in a bid to preserve our woods. To make the project self financing the trees are being offered as a unique remembrance gift - an Irish Memorial tree, currently being sold to people all over the world. The tree is planted on site in Ireland, while a photo and personalised certificate are mailed to the Tree buyer. Danny Sheahan, the project leader, says" We wanted to do something, that celebrates Irelands woodland heritage and to ensure that it was there for generations to come".

On the website there is a quote from proverbs " it is a tree of life". Deirdre, the Co-ordinator says " we felt that this summed up what the tree mean to us and our customers, the represent the love and joy of a life well lived". Most of the tree sold so far have been to Irish Americans, using it as a living irish memorial, to a departed loved one. The poignant testimonials bear witness to how much comfort this unique remembrance gift can bring to a family memorial tree irish memorial."

Why not have your own memorial tree planted in Ireland. We in Gift of Ireland intend to keep on planting memorial trees in Ireland

Our memorial tree programme was partially inspired by:

Ringfinnan Garden of Remembrance

Kinsale Garden of Remembrance trees is in honour of  the memory of Fr. Michael Judge, Chaplain in the New York Fire Department and his colleagues, 343 brave fire fighters, who so courageously lost their lives in New York on September 11th 2001.

The Kinsale Garden of Remembrance was thought of by Kathleen Murphy, a nurse in New York City. She was born in Ringfinnan, Kinsale and her family continue to reside there. The first memorial tree planting ceremony took place in November 2001 and this was followed by an official memorial dedication of the garden on 10th March 2002 by the then Minister for Agriculture & Food, Joe Walsh, T.D.

Many of the Firefighters who gave there life that day, were of Irish descent, and a memorial tree is an ideal way to honour and their bravery. A Memorial tree to their bravery and to show that their homeland is proud of them.

To get to Ringfinnan from Kinsale, go past the Trident Hotel along the road road running parallel with the Bandon River in the direction of Cannon Duggan Bridge. At the bridge, turn left and go over the bridge, then take a right turn. After 200 yards, turn right up the hill to Ringfinnan following the signpost plant a memorial tree in ireland, buy a memorial tree, memorial trees for loved ones as an irish gift or irish gifts or as an irish memorial. memorial trees are the ideal irish memorial trees, as are memorial trees
